Grain is the integration tool nobody reaches for

A still that will not sit in a sequence is usually clean, not badly graded. Matching grain fixes it in one operation.

A still dropped into a sequence of moving footage announces itself, and the instinct is always to grade it harder. That is usually the wrong tool.

What actually gives it away

Three things, in order.

Absence of grain. Camera footage has noise; a clean still does not. The eye reads that difference as a change in material even at low contrast, and it reads it immediately.

Absence of movement. A static frame among moving ones. This is why even a slow push helps so much, and why a completely locked-off insert is the hardest case.

Edge quality. A photograph is optically sharper than most motion capture, particularly if it has been sharpened for stills use. Perfectly crisp edges among softer ones look pasted.

Colour is fourth on that list, and it is where most of the effort goes.

Matching grain

Add grain last, after the grade, at the delivery resolution. Grain added before a resize gets resampled and stops looking like grain.

Match three properties: size, intensity and colour. Size is the one people get wrong; grain that is too fine looks like digital noise and grain that is too coarse looks like an effect. Sample from the footage the still sits next to rather than from a preset.

If the sequence has been denoised, add grain to both rather than trying to make the still as clean as the treated footage.

Softening on purpose

Slightly reducing the sharpness of a still is counterintuitive and frequently correct. If the frame is going to sit next to footage from a particular lens, matching the falloff at the edges of frame does more than any colour adjustment.

Do it after the grade and before the grain.

Colour, done briefly

Match the shadow tint first and the highlight rolloff second. Accept a difference in the midtones; audiences read the extremes.

If the plate sits behind titles or under heavy treatment, matching matters far less than people fear, and time spent on grain is better invested.

The 8-bit caveat

A JPEG is 8-bit, and heavy grading in 8-bit bands the sky. Convert to 16-bit before you grade rather than after: the precision recovers nothing, but it stops each adjustment quantising the one before, which is where most banding actually comes from.

Grain, added at the end, also dithers whatever quantisation survives. It is doing two jobs at once.
